Plants

Today we started our new topic on plants. When we came into class this morning we had to look carefully at two plants on our desks. We drew them and thought of adjectives to describe them. They were the same species but they looked really different, as you can see from our photo.

Then this afternoon we worked with Mrs Whiteley to carefully observe lots of different types of plants. We had to try and think of the best adjectives to describe their leaves, stems and flowers.

Thanks, Mrs Whiteley, for a really fun start to our topic. Keep watching our blog to see how much we learn about plants in the next few weeks!

We can measure using rulers

Today we learned about why it's important to use standard measurements when we want to measure things. We learned the 'Golden Ruler Rules' and practised using them to measure lines of different lengths. You have to really concentrate and keep your hands still as it's quite tricky!

Respect Week Award

Well done to the winner of our Year One Respect Week Award. He was very pleased with his Lego prize, which he thoroughly deserved for having super manners all week and producing lovely work about respect, being a good friend, and looking after people who need our help. He also decided to send his 'thank you for helping me' card to his doctor, which Mrs Jewsbury and I thought was a lovely idea.

We can tell the time

We loved the warm weather last week, not least because it meant we could show what we've learned about how to tell the time on our playground clock.

Can you work out which time we've made?

Rhyming

This week we're thinking about rhyme in our English lessons. We played a fantastic game on the BBC website where we had to match rhyming words to help get Max across the river.

A link to the game is on the Year One page of the school's website. Why not have a go and practise your rhyming skills at home?

We watched the solar eclipse

This morning something exciting happened. There was a solar eclipse. The moon was going to pass right in front of the sun. We brought boxes and colanders to school so we could watch it safely.

It was a bit too cloudy to see it properly, but we had a good time looking at the sun shining through the little holes in the colanders. We also had fun playing with our shadows.

Snow Day

We've been so busy recently in Year One that we're only just getting around to blogging our photos from snow day, all those weeks ago.

We investigated what would happen to a big bowl of snow in our classroom (see our Twitter page for all the details of the experiment: https://twitter.com/mvpsyearone). We also had a fantastic time creating snowmen, snow animals and lots of other snowy creatures out on the playing field in Golden Time.

What a great day - we wish it would snow a LOT more!

We also used the snow as part of our science topic on materials. We thought of words to describe snow, and words to describe water. Isn't it funny that the same material can be so different when it gets very cold!
