Blending Sounds

We've been working hard every day on our Letters and Sounds skills. To practise blending our sounds together to make words, Mr Ellis asked us to find the right sound cards, place them together in a row, put a piece of paper over the top, and rub it with a wax crayon. Look at what happened!

More labels!

We've learned that labels can be useful in lots of different ways, so we've not just been sticking labels onto objects in our classroom. We added labels (and captions) to pictures of different animals on the computer.

We also learned about using labels on diagrams, and added labels to diagrams of faces as part of our Science topic.

We also labelled parts of our bodies using Pic Collage on the iPads. 

Labels, labels everywhere...

We've had a fun, busy start to our new year in Year One. Everybody's settled in well and we've been enjoying getting to know one another and find our way around a new classroom. 

With this in mind, we wanted to create some labels to show which things are found in our classroom. We've been learning to write captions, lists and labels in our English lessons, so this activity gave us a chance to show off our new skills. As you can see from the photos, lots of children wanted to make sure they labelled Mr Ellis!

Why not have a go at making some labels for the things in your bedroom at home. Remember to ask permission first!

My sunflower seed

Jacks sunflower is very humongous  it has fallen over .aminahs  sunflower is backwards and tiny jacks sunflower is bigger then aminahs  sunflower is smaller then jacks sunflower. But now it's bent.benjimen bent it but we fixt it.

My seed is dead. Habeebs is tall and so is noors. Mine seed is dark mixed with light brown.habeebs and noors are tall and light brown.habeebs and noors have germinated and mine hasnt." My seed is tiny. And habeebs and noors are light green and extremely tall. Mine is not germinating.

Can all plants live in the sea?

On Monday we began an investigation. We remembered out trip to the seaside and wondered whether all plants could live in the sea, like seaweed. We took two plants. They were the same species - petunias. Lewis chose two of the plants that were nearly identical - the same size, same number of buds, both with no flowers yet. We also made sure we used the same type of pot, the same compost, and we put them in the same place in our classroom. 

The only thing we changed was: we decided to give one plant ordinary water to drink and gave the other one salty water. Can you remember why we made everything else the same?

Our scientists tried to give the plants the same amount of water too, as you can see.

The picture above shows what we found when we came into class the next morning (Tuesday). The salt water plant was drooping over while the ordinary water plant was standing up straight and tall.

Our team of scientists kept on watering the plants each day and by Thursday the salt water plant looked like the picture above. The leaves were all shrivelled up and there was some white, powdery stuff (that looked like salt) all round the base of the stems.

We carried on watering the plants each day and by Friday they looked like this:

Can you think of some good adjectives to describe the two plants? What do you think our investigation has taught us? Could all plants live in the sea? 

What is this mysterious object?

This morning when we came in to do our early work we saw this photo. We had to guess what it was and describe it. Habeeb remembered that Benjamin said it looked like a circle. Jamal said it looked slimy, but when he touched the potato he said it was quite hard. Zoe thought it looked like spit because it was all white.

Then Mr Ellis showed us what was in the picture. It was a potato. Something strange had happened to them in his cupboard at home. 

We are going to try and figure out what it was!
